The Federation of Victorian Traditional Owner Corporations has applauded the State Government for responding to its constant calls for fresh funding commitments for Traditional Owners, with news landing today that more than $100 million has been secured for Aboriginal Victorians. This includes $30 million for Treaty.

The Victorian Government delivered the first budget of the Andrews government’s second term this morning, which outlined a suite of new funding packages for Traditional Owner Corporations including a $13 million Treaty readiness package.

This announcement comes just six months after the Federation made a formal submission to the incoming state government to pledge genuine investment towards a Treaty readiness package to ensure Traditional Owner groups are prepared for Treaty.

Federation Chair Jason Mifsud, who was still publicly advocating to secure this vital funding up until late last week, said this was a significant announcement in that it demonstrates government are genuine in their commitment for self-determination and Treaty more broadly.

“This is another example of how influential and powerful our voices can be when we work collaboratively, and with a united voice to create lasting change for our communities,” he said.

“This crucial funding will not only empower our communities, but it will enable them to enhance and support the development of greater capability and capacity to build a stronger future for our future generations.

“We know this is just the beginning of a new chapter, so we will be working harder than ever to build on this commitment to fiercely advocate for Traditional Owners rights and interests in future budgets as we strive toward greater self-determination and prepare ourselves for Treaty.

“We also acknowledge the ongoing partnership with the Andrews government and its acceptance that for true self-determination to be realised, the primacy of Traditional Owners must be upheld and an equitable distribution of power and resources must be delivered.”
