The Federation knuckles down as it moves to support next phase of the Treaty process in Victoria
As enrolment opens to elect candidates in the next phase of the Treaty process, the Federation of Victorian Traditional Owner Corporations is standing stronger than ever to ensure it empowers, strengthens and supports Traditional Owners.
Enrolment is now open for the First Peoples’ Assembly of Victoria, a body established to be the voice of Aboriginal people in Victoria and help lead discussions as Treaty negotiations progress in Victoria.
Enrolment is open for all Traditional Owners whose Country sits within Victorian State borders. It is also open for Aboriginal people whose traditional Country is outside of Victoria if they have lived in Victoria for three of the last five years.
Federation of Victorian Traditional Owner Corporations CEO Marcus Stewart said the opening of enrolment was a significant step in the Treaty journey.
“This is an unprecedented opportunity to exercise our democratic right as Traditional Owners as we continue to advance the Treaty process in Victoria,” he said.
“This is why it’s so important that everyone gets out there and enrolls to have their say as we look to rewrite history.
“The Federation is working incredibly hard to support Traditional Owner participation throughout this process, because every single vote will count towards a better future, not only for us, but for our children and their children to come.”
The First Peoples’ Assembly will be made up of 33 Victorian Traditional Owners, with reserved seats for formally recognised Traditional Owner groups.
Candidate nominations will open on May 27 and close on June 17. Voting for the Assembly will occur from 8 to 21 July, with options to vote online, in person or via post. Those aged 16 and up are eligible to vote.
