The Opportunity

Victoria is leading the nation on the journey to Treaty.  By the end of 2019, the First Peoples’ Assembly of Victoria (the Assembly) will be setup and the Aboriginal community will start developing a framework to negotiate Treaty or Treaties.

The Victorian Treaty Advancement Commission (the Commission) is looking for self-motivated community members with a passion for Treaty and supporting communities to set up the Assembly.

You will be responsible for delivering face-to-face electoral supports. You’ll support Aboriginal people, families and communities to participate in the Treaty elections. Enrolment will open in May, candidate nominations will take place over May and June, and voting will occur over 2 weeks in July.

You’ll be one of 12 Assembly Election Officers across Victoria.

You will be responsible for helping to achieve three main goals.

 Goal 1: Help your local Aboriginal Communities stay informed about the Assembly election.

Goal 2: Encourage the Aboriginal Community to have their voice heard by enrolling, voting or running in the Assembly election. Every voice makes our people stronger.

Goal 3: Broker relationships and navigate supports available to you.

Successful applicants will be required to attend a fully funded 2-day training course in Melbourne, where participants will receive the background, skills and resources to complete this important role.

About Us

The Commission is an independent office, launched in January 2018. Its job is to establish the First Peoples’ Assembly of Victoria (formerly referred to as the Aboriginal Representative Body) and maintain momentum of the treaty process in Victoria. The Commission will cease to exist once the Assembly is set up.

The Assembly will be an independent and culturally strong voice for Victorian Aboriginal people in the next stages of the treaty process. 

In 2019, all Aboriginal Victorians - 16 years and over - will have the opportunity to enrol and vote in the first election of the Assembly. Individuals with traditional connection to Country in Victorian can run as a candidate for their region.


Focus of the role

This role will be based in the Melbourne Metro region and Yarra Ranges.

The role will be hosted by the Federation of Victorian Traditional Owner Corporations.


To be considered in this role you must:

· Identify as an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander.

· Have a strong connection to the community you reside in.

· Have the ability or proven experience effectively communicating and working with local Aboriginal communities, in person, in writing and over the phone.

- Able to be self-directed.

-Have a driver’s licence and the capacity to travel across communities
