2019-20 State Budget Update

23 May 2019

Dear Traditional Owner Corporation representatives,

2019-20 State budget update

The date for the 2019-20 State Budget has officially been set. It will be delivered on Monday 27 May 2019.

As your peak body, the Federation have continued to fiercely advocate for the rights and interests of all Traditional Owners to make sure crucial funding is secured.

In November last year, the Federation called on the State Government to pledge $63.4 million towards a Treaty readiness package to ensure groups are ready for Treaty. Please see attached the Media Release.

This call on government still stands.

It is stronger now, than it ever was.

Coming on the back of our strategic alignment forum, the timing of this budget announcement is pivotal to resource and enable our communities to explore and exercise their nation building activities as we advance toward Treaty.

We have heard that a serious funding investment is fundamental for Corporations and communities, not only for core support, but to enhance and support the development of greater capability and capacity to build a strong future.

It is also the first test for the government to demonstrate that a new relationship with Traditional Owners and the primacy that we hold is fully resourced and respected now and into the future.

As previously agreed, we are much stronger when we stand together, working collaboratively and with a united collective voice to progress the rights, interests and aspirations of Victoria’s Traditional Owners, for self-determination and Treaty more broadly.

This is paramount, particularly in light of the Federal election results. We will continue to press for the State government’s commitments to be genuinely reflected in the State Budget outcomes.

Yours sincerely
