MEDIA RELEASE: FVTOC Welcome Native Title Act Amendments
FEDERATION OF VICTORIAN TRADITIONAL OWNER CORPORATIONS WELCOMES NATIVE TITLE ACT AMENDMENTS The Federation of Victorian Traditional Owner Corporations (Federation) today welcomed the introduction of the Native Title Act amendments into Parliament. Janine Coombs, Chair of the Federation, said: ‘There are 57 Indigenous Land Use Agreements already being successfully implemented in Victoria. They are the most efficient way for Traditional Owners to negotiate with third parties about future developments and create beneficial outcomes for everyone involved. ‘The recent Federal Court decision requiring all native title claimants to be signatories to each agreement would put unnecessary burdens on groups and slow down the process for everyone involved. ‘These new measures will provide certainty to the thousands of Traditional Owners across the State who may be in the process of negotiating agreements. ‘It’s vital that these reforms are passed. We hope the Senate will act as decisively as the House of Representatives on this issue.’
